At 1:00 am, I decided I would have a dye session tonight. I filled a 30 gallon tub with black fabric dye and tossed in old fishnets, socks, linens, t-shirts, pants, and so on. What a pain in the ass it is. Having no hot water yet, (another week-ish yet for that), I had to fill the tub with hot water from the stove. Just like when we bathe. So much fun there! That was the shitty part. The rest of it isn’t bad except your arms get tired of stirring the fabric around. This is cheaper dye, (dylon, not rit), meaning you to stir it for 45 minutes instead of 30. You may not think an extra 15 minutes is much longer but when your stirring a 30 gallon mass of water and clothes with a small wooden spoon, its never ending and your arms threaten to dislocate themselves from your body and start beating you in the face if you don’t let them rest for a bit.
I need to get a few bottle of black rit dye to finish them. This cheap stuff isn’t very good. We’ll need about 30 more packets to get the right shade, so it would cost about $40 to do all the fabric in this tub. If we go get rit dye, it will only be 1-2 bottle for under $10. Should have got rit dye to begin with but … This stuff was only $1 something so we grabbed a couple packets of it instead of rit.
Look, pictures: They are not the best quality, I took them with my cellphone.

About 20 minutes in...A light blueish grey color.

We will have to dye them 1-2 more times with twice the amount of dye to get the right shade....
‘Tis 4:30 am now.
This blue-ish grey color you see is what color the fabric stayed at. I kept the water temperature around 140 and stirred my ass off but, 1) We bought cheap dye 2) We had a lot of items to dye 3) We needed more dye (better dye) 4) Stirring is not much fun.
Well, I’m off to wash all this stuff now to rid the excess dye. Before I go, although this will be completely irrelevant to the topic, I’d like to leave you with a nice quote from Dorothy Parker. Just for fun.
“That would be a good thing for them to cut on my tombstone: Wherever she went, including here, it was against her better judgment. “

I would like to point out that Rit does not last very long. Each have their own benefits and downsides. Tonight is my first attempt with Dylon.
