Candle making

June 16th, 2008 by misadventuresofmarla

Jeremy and I got some candle making stuff on clearance at Joanne’s. We got candle wick by the Foot for $0.25! Then we got ounces of fragrance for $0.97 a bottle. It was great!

I made a really fucking swell candle container out of an old tea tin. I just painted it with acrylic paint and printed out some pictures from the internet to glue on it. Then, I went on a hunt for all our candle nubs that we save. We burn a lot of candles so I ended up having more than enough to fill the tin. Here are the steps in case you want to do it yourself.

Melt the wax on med heat. I did mine in two batches. This is the first batch. The reason I do it in two batches is because it helps avoid a giant sinking hole near the wick as the wax cools and hardens. If you fill half the container, let it harden and sink, and then fill in with the second batch it doesn’t sink as bad. So, let the first batch set before you start the next.

While you wait for the wax to melt you should prep your container. You’ll want to anchor your wick down with something so it does not move while the wax hardens. You can use a safety pin if nothing else or I use a “male” part of a snap (leather bracelet snaps) to anchor the wick. Just repeatedly dip the wick and snap into the melting wax, position in the tin, pour a little wax over it in the tin, and then once its hardened in place you can pour the wax into the container and the wick “shouldn’t” move around. To keep the wick straight I just use free stir sticks from Dunkin’ Donuts and tape the wick to them. (See a few photos down)

Once its all melted, remove from burner and add fragrance.

I just dumped it in but your supposed to only use like 1/8 ounce or something.

Mix it up…

Pour wax in container…I spilled mine a bit so Elvira and Eddie look a little two-toned now. Once the first batch of wax sets in the container you can start to melt your next batch.

I decided to change the candle color so the second half (Top half of candle) is metallic red.

Thats it.

Here is the finished project!
